Anyone who sees the sun shining outside would suspect otherwise, but the summer weather of the past few days will make way for heavy showers on Thursday. The RMI warns with code yellow for thunderstorms in the east and center of the country. Weatherman Ruben Weytjens expects more than 50 liters of precipitation per square meter locally.

Thursday promises to be a thundery day with a very unstable atmosphere. The RMI expects showers in the regions along the French border, then over the east and in the course of or at the end of the afternoon and evening also in the center and in Flanders. Locally there will be thunderstorms with a chance of hail or a lot of precipitation in a short time. Amounts of more than 20 mm of precipitation in one hour are possible locally.

Heavy cloudbursts

Weatherman Ruben Weytjens warns of very intense showers. “Especially in the northeast of the province, a lot of rain can fall locally, up to 50 liters per square meter. Thunderstorms and hail are also not excluded.”

There is a risk of heavy cloudbursts on Thursday, especially between 8 p.m. and midnight, says Ruben Weytjens. “Take into account possible ‘flash floods’, where an enormous mass of water suddenly comes down the slopes. That is a point of attention for campsites. A small shift can also cause the large precipitation amounts to rise above Belgian Limburg.”

Code yellow

The RMI therefore announces a code yellow for thunderstorms, although the meteorological institute also says that the weather situation is still complex, which means that the forecasts can still be adjusted.

The maximum temperatures on Thursday will fluctuate between 14 and 20 degrees along the French border and in the Ardennes, and between 20 and 23 degrees in the center and the Kempen.
