The 81-year-old American president referred with a wink to concerns about his age. “Age is an issue,” Biden said, “I’m a grown man taking on a 6-year-old.”
Trump’s criminal case about the possible payment of hush money to porn actress Stormy Daniels was also discussed. “Donald has had some tough days. You can even speak of ‘Stormy Weather’.”
During his speech, Biden also “sincerely” called on the press not to take sides. “I ask you to understand the seriousness of the moment.” In his view, journalists should not be guided by side issues that have come to dominate politics. “Focus on what’s really at stake.” Biden cited “Trump’s attack on our democracy,” according to American media, and called for contributing to the survival of democracy.
Hundreds of people took action at the Washington Hilton hotel following the dinner. They chanted slogans about the deaths of reporters in the Gaza Strip and called on journalists present to boycott the event. Biden avoided the protests and entered the building from the rear.
