Polish President Andrzej Duda (51) is criticized after some statements about the war in Ukraine. During an interview, Duda said he is not confident Ukraine will ever regain the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia. “Historically, the island has been in Russian hands for the longest time,” the president said. Duda’s comments quickly caused a commotion. “What an incredibly stupid statement. Crimea belongs to Ukraine,” critics say.

In an interview with the YouTube channel ‘Kanal Zero’, Duda was asked on Friday whether he thinks Ukraine will succeed in retaking Crimea. The peninsula was annexed by Russia in 2014. “It is difficult for me to answer that question,” said the Polish president. “I am not sure that Ukraine will regain Crimea, but I do believe it will regain Donetsk and Luhansk,” he continued.

In September 2022, Russia claimed the two eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk together with Kherson (in the south) and Zaporizija (in the southwest) as Russian territory after internationally condemned sham referendums. According to Duda, Crimea is “a special place for historical reasons.” “Because historically speaking, the island has been in Russian hands for the longest time,” he concluded.

“Crimea belongs to Ukraine”

Duda’s statements quickly received negative reactions. Vasyl Zvarych, the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, responded to X that Crimea “belongs to Ukraine.” “That is currently the case and will always be the case,” he wrote. Polish politician Roman Giertych also strongly opposed Duda. “What an incredibly stupid statement. I would like to remind Mr. Duda that there are also cities in our country that have historically belonged to Poland for less time than to any other country.”

Following the fuss, Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland’s Foreign Minister, stressed that Warsaw “recognizes the independence of Ukraine within its internationally established borders.”

Duda himself also attempted to clarify his statements earlier today. The president stated that his position on Russian aggression has been clear from day one. “Russia’s attack on Ukraine and its occupation of internationally recognized areas of Ukraine, including Crimea, is a crime. We all stand shoulder to shoulder for a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine against aggression and brutal imperialism!” he wrote on X.
