Godvendegem

A serious fire in Godveerdegem, a sub-municipality of Zottegem, has probably claimed the life of the resident of a house in Leliestraat. Dozens of local residents were evacuated.

The fire was noticed around 2.15 am, but the fire brigade had a tough task. The fire raged so fiercely that the Zottegem fire station, assisted by the Brakel and Herzele stations, was still unable to enter the house after two hours of extinguishing the fire.

It is suspected that the resident, in his eighties, is still in the home and died in the fire. About ten people from homes in the immediate area were evacuated because the fire was accompanied by enormous smoke development and the smoke entered their homes. Tweekerkenstraat is closed to all traffic. (Eric De Pessemier)
