The US said it carried out air strikes on Friday against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria. The attacks are in retaliation for the deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan.
General Yehia Rasool, spokesperson for the Iraqi Prime Minister, confirmed the US attacks in the Al-Qaim sector, on the border with Syria and “other Iraqi border regions”. The attacks “are a threat that will drag Iraq and the region into an unpredictable situation that will have disastrous consequences,” he said.
US: “Iraq warned of attacks”
White House spokesman John Kirby indicated that Washington had notified the Iraqi government about the attacks. He also reiterated that the US does not want war with Iran and indicated that he had not had any communications, formal or informal, with Iran since the attack against US soldiers in Jordan, which the US said was the work of militants linked to Tehran to collaborate.
The US strikes on Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria lasted about thirty minutes and were said to have been successful, according to Kirby. The attacks included the use of B-1 bombers launched from the US and carrying more than 125 precision-guided munitions.
