Ukrainian Military Intelligence (GUR) says it has sunk another Russian warship in Russian-occupied Crimea. Spectacular images show how the ship is hit and moments later disappears into the waves. Russian war bloggers confirm that the Ivanovets has completely sunk. The Kremlin has not yet responded.

According to the GUR, the attack was carried out last night. Images released by the intelligence service show kamikaze drones heading towards the ship and then detonating it. A little later the ship lists and disappears ‘Titanic-style’ into the waves: with the bow disappearing last.

Security firm Ambrey says Ukraine deployed up to six naval drones in the attack, each capable of carrying 300 kilograms of explosives.

Direct hits

The Ivanovets belongs to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. According to the GUR, the ship was carrying out an operation on Lake Donuzlav in Crimea. It sank after taking “a number of direct hits on the hull”. The ship reportedly suffered so much damage that it sank.

It would be a ship worth 60 to 70 million dollars (55 to 65 million euros), according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. It was equipped to fire supersonic anti-ship missiles and could carry up to 40 crew members.

Russian war bloggers say the crew continued to defend themselves to the end, but was unable to repel the attack. “After an explosion, the ship sank completely,” it said.

Moskva

In December, Ukraine also sank the ‘Novocherkassk’ in occupied Crimea. In October, the Russian flagship ‘Admiral Makarov’ suffered the same fate. Most controversial, however, was the sinking of the ‘Moskva’ in April last year. That was then the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
