The accident happened at the intersection with the Steenweg on Zevendonk. The vehicle drove towards the center of Turnhout, but suddenly swerved and ended up through the garden into the facade of the house. At that moment, the residents, two people over 90, were having breakfast at the dining table. They were not injured, but were too impressed to go out on their own. They were taken to hospital in shock.

The driver of the van tried to flee after the accident, but police quickly caught him. The vehicle is towed, after which the fire brigade will shore up the house.

“The driver of the van with Polish license plate is a 28-year-old man. After the accident he took off running through the city park. Another driver from Lommel, who was driving on the Steenweg in Zevendonk and saw the man walking away after the accident, ran after him,” says a spokesperson for the Turnhout Region police. “He was able to stop the driver in a side street while waiting for the police. “The man had been drinking heavily and was handcuffed at the request of the public prosecutor.”
