During a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is diverting attention from the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian president, on the other hand, denies that the offensive against Russia has reached an impasse. “Everyone is tired, but this is not a stalemate,” he said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was in Kiev on Saturday to discuss the steps his country has taken towards EU membership with President Zelensky.
Kiev has been asking to join the alliance since the start of the war, in February 2022. A few months after the Russian invasion, Ukraine was granted candidate member state status, but it soon became clear that the road to membership would be long and difficult.
Now that the war has entered its twentieth month, the world seems to be growing tired of the conflict, according to Zelensky. In addition, all eyes are now focused on the situation in Israel, the president said during the meeting with von der Leyen.
“It is clear that the war in the Middle East is diverting attention from Ukraine,” he said. “We have already found ourselves in very difficult situations when there was almost no attention for Ukraine, but I am sure that we will overcome this challenge,” Zelensky continued.
“No stalemate”
Earlier this week, Ukrainian Army Chief of Staff Valery Zaluzhny claimed that both Russia and Ukraine are “at a standstill.” In an interview with the British weekly ‘The Economist’, Zaluzhny admitted that the Ukrainian army has made errors of judgment and that the counter-offensive is progressing much slower than expected.

But Zelensky disagrees. “A lot of time has passed, people are tired… but this is not a stalemate,” he said. Von der Leyen also emphasized that Ukraine has already achieved “many milestones”. “We must not forget that you are waging an existential war and at the same time you are deeply reforming your country,” the Commission President said.
