Hamburg airport was closed on Saturday evening and air traffic was halted after an armed man entered the site in his car. The police are in contact with him and speak of a hostage situation with a child.

The German newspaper Bild reports that the man drove onto a runway just after 8 p.m. and shot twice into the air. His four-year-old child is also in his car, Bild writes. The police confirm the presence of one child, after previously reporting two children. The man’s wife had contacted police about a possible kidnapping.
The man also set several fires in the area surrounding the airport and threw two Molotov cocktails from his car. No significant damage was caused and the airport fire brigade was able to extinguish the fires.
On A police spokesperson reports that the police are in contact with the man, but it is not clear how that contact takes place.
All air traffic to and from Hamburg has been temporarily suspended. 27 flights and around 3,000 passengers are affected. Flights were expected on Saturday evening from Malaga and Lisbon, among others. Some flights are being diverted, others have been cancelled.
