Into The Great Wide Open is a place where you don’t have to drop the kids off at Grandpa and Grandma’s for a long weekend. They just go with it. You see them everywhere, with thick noise-canceling headphones on their heads. With wide eyes they look on their daddy’s shoulders at their first real concert. From S10 for example, who puts on a major pop show on Thursday evenings. The white light, the booming bass: everything is right. Three years ago she already showed that she is a ‘diamond in the rough’, but in the meantime she has paid a visit to the master polisher. And when froukje appears on stage for the duet ‘Without Face’, it is clear from the cheering that the ITGWO audience has long embraced this new generation of pop stars.
Two days later they just do the same song again, but then during the show of Froukje, who ends her festival summer on Vlieland and stays on the island to record her debut album. Debut record? Yes dude, her show is so overflowing with hits that you almost forget that the first full album is yet to come. When she leaves the field with tired legs after her biggest hit ‘I Want to Dance’, they sing back to her ‘Happy Birthday’. Long live Froukje.
But the most pleasant show of the weekend can be found at the frank nnelg, who knows how to pack a full Open Spot on Sunday afternoon with his strong live band. He is an incredibly charming appearance, who makes it clear from the first second that ‘we do it together’ here, and the public teasing gives numbers. ‘I think…. a 7.2?’ Loud begs for a thicker enough. After the closing lesson in gratitude from ‘Give Thanks’ comes the redeeming word: ‘I want to congratulate you with a ten. You were perfect’.
