In real life, Fraser underwent a physical transformation as well. The American actor (53) struggled with health problems after stunts in “George of the jungle” and “The mummy” and underwent back and knee operations. He stayed out of the picture for years and blames his weight gain on that difficult period.

Fraser prepared for “The whale” by talking to people who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. “You have to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to live in similar bodies,” he told journalists in Venice. Fraser literally felt the tens of extra pounds. “When the suit came off at the end of the day, I felt dizzy.”

The international press is full of praise for his acting. “An intensely lived and moving performance”, writes the trade magazine Variety. The BBC itself calls the film “disappointingly stiff and sentimental”, but Fraser “deserves a rich Oscar nomination”. Oscar nomination or not, the word “Brenaissance” – Bren(dan Faser)’s comeback – is already circulating in Hollywood. A victory in itself.
