New Mexico, 1897
The story follows Max Borlund (Waltz), a famous bounty hunter hired to track down the politically progressive wife of a successful businessman. She has been kidnapped by a runaway African American soldier and is being held for ransom.
While traveling south of the border, Borlund encounters his sworn enemy, American Joe Cribbens (Dafoe), a professional gambler who ended up in prison years earlier thanks to Max.
Then Borlund discovers that the woman has voluntarily fled from her abusive husband and that the soldier is in fact her romantic partner. He now faces a dilemma: will he bring the woman back or help her in a bloody fight for freedom?
