The John Wickfranchise is not only known for its hard-hitting action scenes: the mythology of the world also appears to be an important selling point. In each of the four films, director Chad Stahelski gave us more and more assassins, more factions, and more ways for John Wick to achieve his goals.
Now he wants to do the same with his reboot of Highlander. That film is about immortal warriors in a centuries-long fight to the death. It was recently announced that star actor Henry Cavill will officially play the lead role, and now Chad Stahelski tells us in an interview with Screen Rant what exactly he has planned.
Different sides of immortality
“I hope this brings the potential that we all see in that franchise,” said the director. He says that decades after the original films (and TV series), he still wants more.
“I think that (…) mythology of people going through the ages, and the burden of immortality as much as the wish fulfillment of immortality, you know, how you deal with people you love and people you don’t love , (…) one of the most romantic, interesting, existential things [is] I have ever seen.”
A logical sequel to John Wick
Stahelski goes on to say that it seems like a natural progression from his work with John Wick. “It gives me another realm to play in,” he says. “The potential behind that is more than any brand I work on.”
The production of the new Highlander will launch in 2024. In the meantime, you can John Wick: Chapter 4 streaming now via Pathé Thuis.
