The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Avengers series was an undisputed box office hit. From the OG to Endgame, Marvel and Disney made billions of dollars and fans went wild with each new installment added to the franchise. Since then, however, the ‘fanfare’ has waned somewhat. The TV series are variable, just think of Loki, WandaVision, She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, which did not always have the same success as the films.

Characters like Thor and Ant-Man also haven’t attracted as much attention on the big screen since Thanos was defeated, although the MCU has a new supervillain in Kang the Conquerer. However, the actor who brought Kang to life, Jonathan Majors, has caused quite a headache at Marvel and Disney after he was accused of assaulting a woman; something he has categorically denied. While that investigation continues, there are many rumors in Hollywood about possible options for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Return of the original gang?

A new report from Variety states: Sources say there have been talks to bring back the original gang for an Avengers movie. This would include bringing back Iron Man as well as Black Widow, both of whom were ‘written off’ in Endgame. But the studio has yet to commit not pinned down to the idea.” We know what you’re thinking: how on earth can Iron Man and Black Widow come back?

Well, Variety explains that the comics regularly bring characters who may have died in previous issues back to life via the multiverse. However, it could be an expensive endeavor to get Downey Jr. and having Johansson reprise their iconic characters, as they are some of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. That’s just one of the options apparently being explored. Another idea reportedly being considered is changing the supervillain from Kang to Dr Doom, who you may remember from Fantastic 4.

“There are conflicting stories”

oanna Robinson, author of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, said during The Ringer’s The Big Picture podcast: “We don’t know what they’re going to do. I’ve heard conflicting stories that they’re going to replace him. Some even say they’re not considering replacing him, etc. But it’s just another thing going on apparently. We’ll see …” So the future seems uncertain and it will certainly be difficult to recreate the magic of the first Avengers film series.
