Brussels green space increased, but unevenly distributed

In the Pentagon and first crown, the Warande Park and the Cinquantenaire Park are the only large green areas. The second crown from the Middle Ring, being the large avenues such as Auguste Reyerslaan and Winston Churchillaan, is better equipped. There you will find green areas of different sizes, such as the Sonian Forest, the Bois de la Cambre and the Woluwe Park.

The quality of green spaces in the second crown also appears to be higher, with more forests and areas of ‘high biological value’. “In other words, the city center suffers from a shortage of publicly accessible green spaces, which are also smaller and less wooded,” BISA said.

Population increase

The supply of green space per inhabitant has not increased. According to the report, this has remained stable over the past forty years, with an average of 25 square meters for the region, and only 5 square meters per inhabitant in the center of Brussels.

According to the BISA, the cause lies mainly in significant population growth in the Pentagon and the first crown, “where population density is putting increasing pressure on existing green spaces.”
