The first world title on the road has been handed out in Wollongong, Australia. In the men’s juniors, the German Emil Herzog beat the Portuguese Morgado. Within a minute of the two, our compatriot Vlad Van Mechelen sprinted to third place. For Belgium already the fourth medal of this World Cup, only gold is still missing on the list.

The World Cup couldn’t have started worse for our compatriots. A combination of rain and a nervous peloton ensured that there was serious fall already in the first lap. Our compatriot Duarte Marivoet was the unlucky person of the day and was taken to the hospital. Jens Verbrugghe also fell behind, world time trial champion Josh Tarling also had to leave the arena bruised.

In the meantime, the game did not stop. The Czech Novak and the Est Pajur soon opted for the offensive and were caught up two laps later by four. The peloton was meanwhile thinned out considerably, Mount Pleasant turned out not to be fun at all for the juniors.

Of the Belgians, only Vlad Van Mechelen managed to stay at the front for the real final. On the penultimate climb of Mount Pleasing, the Dutchman decided to shake Huising at the tree, the real attack came from the Portuguese Morgado, with an impressive moustache. A foursome joined, moments later three also managed to make the crossing with Vlad Van Mechelen.

Exciting final

Going into the last lap, Morgado decided to shake the tree again. He started the final ascent of Mount Pleasant solo. Among the pursuers, the German Herzog played knight or mass. The German managed to keep up with the Portuguese star. It came to a sprint with two in which both riders flew side by side towards the finish. It was only in the last 25 meters that the German managed to make a small difference.

In the background, it again came to a fusion that allowed Vlad Van Mechelen to sprint for bronze. Our compatriot timed his effort perfectly and flew past the rest of the chasing group at high speed for bronze. After Joris and Evenepoel’s bronze and Segaert’s silver, this is already the fourth medal for the Belgian delegation.
