Sustainability is highly regarded in Affligem. Last year, the local government offered its staff the opportunity to purchase an electric bicycle for commuting. Partly because of this, many employees are already using more and more to cycle to work.
In the workplace, people often talked about ‘coming to work by bike’ and so the idea arose in the corridors of the town hall to switch up a gear: ‘Why don’t we all cycle around the world together?’
One lap around the world is more than 40,000 km. and so Affligem, as a ‘Healthy Municipality’, is committed to sustainable mobility and healthy exercise.
This promotion was launched on ‘Car Free Day – Thursday 22 September 2022’. On this day, the municipality of Affligem rewarded everyone who came to or passed by the town hall in a healthy and environmentally friendly way to go to school or work with coffee, fruit juice, fruit, yogurt and gingerbread.
“The Affligem municipal staff wants to be an example for all residents, youth and associations! They are already GoedOpWeg to reduce their cars”, says Herman Steppe, Alderman for sports, health and prevention.
