Englishman Anthony Taylor must manage the clash between the Netherlands and Belgium

The Englishman Anthony Taylor has been appointed by the European Football Confederation UEFA to lead the 129th Derby of the Low Countries on Sunday evening between the Netherlands and Belgium in a sold-out Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, UEFA announced on Thursday.

The 43-year-old top referee was appointed for the first time for a match of the Red Devils. Last year he whistled the final of the Nations League between Spain and France in Milan, which had previously eliminated Belgium in the semi-finals. A year earlier, he was a referee in the Champions League match between Club Brugge and Lazio. He was also active at EURO 2020.

There is still something at stake in the Nations League, but if the Netherlands does not leave anything behind in Poland on Thursday, the final match in the ArenA will be a particularly tough task for the Belgians. After all, in the event of a tie, the mutual result is decisive and afterwards the mutual goal difference, and a few months ago at the Heysel the Devils lost 1-4 against the Orange. As a result, in that case, as things stand now, a four-goal difference in the Dutch capital is needed, although this also depends on the results on Thursday.

After four match days, the Red Devils are in second place with seven points, three points behind leader Netherlands, which opens its diptych with a move to Poland. Only the group winner qualifies for the Final Four, which will be played in June 2023 and for which Belgium is a candidate organizer.
