Belgian investigators who are closely following the disappearance case of the missing Natacha de Crombrugghe (28) from our country have serious questions about the human remains found in Peru. According to local media, they might belong to Natacha. “We hope that the results of the forensic investigation will soon make us wiser,” says Alain Remue of the Missing Persons Unit.

The human remains were discovered in the Peruvian province of Caylloma, about 45 kilometers from Cabanaconde, the Peruvian village in the Arequipa region where Natacha disappeared on January 24 of this year. As the crow flies, about twenty kilometers. The site is very remote and Peruvian investigators took more than ten hours to reach the site of the macabre find. They made the necessary determinations on the spot and they eventually had to spend the night there, because the drive back was too far.

Macabre mise en scene

Natacha’s parents, who spent the summer in Belgium but have been back in Peru since early September, were skeptical about the find. They even openly shared a post on social media: “The so-called body found by fishermen in the Colca River is a macabre mise-en-scene of an ancient skull between two wooden-legged rocks. The police are on site. There is little chance that it is Natacha.”

The Belgian investigators who closely follow the disappearance case also have questions. Bizarre so-called ‘golden tips’ had already come in before – sometimes even in exchange for money – but not a single tip turned out to be an actual concrete trace to the missing lawyer.

“If this was staged for whatever reason, I find it downright distasteful,” said Alain Remue. “We are awaiting the results of the forensic investigation to clarify whether or not this is a valuable lead. It is important that there is clarity about this quickly, in the first place for the parents,” says Remue. Shortly after Natacha’s disappearance, investigators from our country traveled to Peru to help them search.

Three hypotheses

After eight months without any trace of Natacha, investigators are still considering the following three hypotheses: the girl fell in the wild nature or someone with less good intentions crossed her path during her trek through the Colca Gorge. A third track is also kept open: Natacha never left her hostel La Estancia and became the victim of a criminal act there. The hypotheses of suicide and that she would have left with the northern sun without letting her family know are ruled out.
