A pilot project will start in Antwerp on Thursday in which 1,120 people can be vaccinated preventively against the monkeypox virus. It concerns men who have sex with men and who have had at least 1 STI in the past year. This means that people in Flanders who are not infected with the virus will also be vaccinated.

Although the number of monkey pox infections seems to have stagnated in recent weeks, new infections are still being added every week. In Flanders, 394 people have been infected with the virus since the start of the outbreak, mainly men in the age group of 20 to 59 years who have sex with men.

A pilot project is now starting in Antwerp in which 1,120 people can initially be vaccinated against monkey pox. The predefined target group is men who have sex with men and who have had at least 1 STI in the past year. They can voluntarily be vaccinated on Thursday 22 September at the Antwerp vaccination center.

According to Flemish Minister of Welfare Hilde Crevits, the aim of the pilot project is to reach a target group that is not known to the HIV reference centers. “We want to prepare for the autumn when we expect a new supply of monkeypox vaccines,” said the CD&V minister. blg
