The Plastics Whale is a submarine of Professor Gobelijn with which Jommeke and his friends experience many adventures. Artist Luc Cauwenberghs made a replica with recycling material, litter and metal waste supplied by the companies ISVAG and Belgian Scrap Terminal. The statue was inaugurated on Wednesday 21 September by Jommeke in the presence of Wilrijk street volunteers.

The artwork is the final chord of an awareness-raising project that the district set up with Standaard Uitgeverij and DEME. In the spring, pupils from ten primary schools in Wilrijk visited a pop-up exhibition where they learn more about litter and how we can live plastic-free.

“Sometimes a picture fits perfectly, like here with the Plastic Whale”, says district mayor Kristof Bossuyt. “The close bond between Jommeke and his native village Wilrijk is only strengthened with this circular work of art. In addition, we are strongly committed to raising awareness about litter in Wilrijk. There was the school project in the spring, but above all we are proud of the more than four hundred residents who regularly work as street volunteers. In addition, the Wilrijk youth movements also roll up their sleeves twice a year during major clean-up campaigns that ISVAG sets up together with them. The Plastic Whale symbolizes all this effort.”
