Anderlecht

Brussels Member of Parliament Juan Benjumea-Moreno (Green) drove his bicycle against a concrete block on the George Moreaustraat in Cureghem on Monday evening. Opponents of the newly introduced circulation plan have been expressing their displeasure for months and are now also destroying and moving the concrete blocks.

In mid-July, the new circulation plan was rolled out in the Anderlecht district of Cureghem, which should prevent through traffic and make several streets car-free. But opponents of the plan made themselves heard immediately

A petition against the plans quickly garnered more than 5,000 signatures and the new road signs were painted over and removed. Last week, the protest reached a new peak during the Anderlecht city council. The protest was so fierce that the city council was terminated early. After a complaint about vandalism, the police even patrol the house of Anderlecht’s mobility councilor Susanne Müller-Hübsch (Green).

Newly placed concrete blocks for the circulation plan are also removed and destroyed. Not only does that create dangerous traffic situations, on Monday evening Brussels MP Juan Benjumea-Moreno rode his bicycle on a displaced concrete block.

“I came from the Veeartsenstraat and took the bend to the George Moreaustraat, but hit the concrete block that had been placed on the bike path. Earlier in the day, a local resident filmed how a number of people had moved it and that video has already been handed over to the police. I have also filed a complaint myself.”

Lost a tooth

Benjumea-Moreno has abrasions, a muscle injury and has lost a piece of tooth. “However, this could have ended much worse. It is worrying that people are endangering cyclists with this behavior. I don’t know if they deliberately placed the concrete block on the bike path, but with their action they clearly wanted to provoke something. Proponents of the new circulation plan are currently no longer daring to make their voices heard, due to the aggressiveness of some opponents. The way some express their displeasure is worrying.”

Meanwhile, the local police have removed the destroyed and displaced concrete blocks. For the second day in a row, the Council of Aldermen of Anderlecht will meet on Wednesday during a session on the circulation plan. At the moment nothing has come out of that.
