The Gordel attracted around 8,700 registered cyclists and walkers to the Vlaamse Rand this year. Many others enjoyed performances and children’s entertainment in the Botanic Garden of Meise and Provincial Domain Huizingen.

After two corona editions, in which the event was spread over a whole week, De Gordel took place again under normal circumstances: one major event with a mix of sports, performances and animation in the Vlaamse Rand.

Just under ten thousand walkers and cyclists set out from the Botanic Garden of Meise, which celebrates its 225th anniversary this year, and the provincial domain of Huizingen for a beautiful walk or bike ride along the Vlaamse Rand.

New this year was the Gordelcross course. A course was laid out on the Provincial Domain of Huizingen where one could enjoy a demo match of former champions such as Paul Herygers, Sven Vanthourenhout and Klaas Vantornout. In addition, there were also cross-initiations for different age groups. Hundreds of children experienced a day they will not soon forget.

To end a fun Belt Sunday, young and old enjoyed animation and performances. In Botanic Garden Meise it was about mood points spread over the botanic garden. “And that was very much appreciated by the public”, says Jo Van Vaerenbergh, director of vzw ‘de Rand’. “The botanical garden lends itself perfectly to combining the sporty with the cultural over a vast domain, a formula that was particularly successful and may well be repeated.

In Provincial Domain Huizingen, among other things, LikeMe was allowed to close an amusing afternoon. “A sunny afternoon with a beautiful line-up and lots of smiling faces. What more could we wish for?” asks provincial commissioner Ann Schevenels. “This year the performances took place in the higher part of the provincial domain: a beautiful environment with a beautiful view. Everyone really enjoyed it after their cycling and walking tour,” said provincial deputy Ann Schevenels.

Just like during the past two corona editions, a belt tree will be planted for every registered participant this year. Thanks to this Belt edition, approximately ten thousand trees or shrubs will be planted in and around the Vlaamse Rand.
