Nobody dared to predict that Belgium would overpower Spain. But national coach Dario Gjergja made a plea for Belgian basketball after the stunt against the world champion.
“We are not a small basketball country,” said the Croat. “We showed today that other countries have to take us into account. I am very happy for this group of players.”
“After the loss to Montenegro we were left with a sour aftertaste. But today we fought for every ball. Except for those 5 bad minutes in the 2nd quarter, this was a dream of a game. I am very proud of my players.”
Gjergja sees a positive evolution for Belgian basketball and also included the victories against Serbia and Lithuania in the World Cup preliminary rounds. “Not only this, but also what we did during the World Cup qualifiers shows that we can do something.”
Gjergja does not want to know that the qualification for the next round now beckons. “Only one thing matters to me: in 2 days we play against Turkey. We now have to rest and recover. I am not looking beyond the match against Turkey yet.”
Top scorer Manu Lecomte (20 points) flanked the national coach at the press conference. “This is a great and well deserved victory,” said Lecomte. “We showed the right mentality from the throw-up. We kept believing in ourselves and never gave up.”
“I am not surprised by this victory. I know the players and the coach very well and I know what we are capable of if we believe in ourselves and play as a team. If we do that, we can do anything. That is our strength .”
“If we continue to show this mentality and attitude, it will be very positive for us. This gives a lot of confidence. I really like this team. “Amazing things always happen”. Everyone believes in each other and the belief is that we do it against everyone can record.”
