The Spanish police have arrested the two leaders of a Dutch-Belgian drug gang in Marbella. One is a Dutchman, the other a Belgian. The two headed an organization that smuggled cocaine from Brazil to Antwerp and Rotterdam. The cocaine was hidden in shipping containers.

Arrests have also been made in the Netherlands and Belgium. A total of nine people have been arrested. The identity of the suspects has not been released.

The arrests are the result of a joint investigation that the Dutch and Belgian police started in 2020. In May of that year, 556 kilos of cocaine were seized in Brazil, a few months later in Rotterdam two consignments of approximately 1000 kilos together and in January 2021 a consignment of 2300 kilos in Antwerp. The deliveries were destined for a Belgian company and two Dutch companies.

‘Never seen’

The investigation revealed that the two clients resided on the Costa del Sol. Initially, the Spanish police tracked down one of them. That client kept moving to a different location, but was eventually tracked down in a villa in Marbella.

Then the second client came into the picture. This person also lived in a villa in Marbella. “The two homes are located in the most expensive areas of Marbella. As a police, we raid homes every week, but I’ve never actually seen this. One house had offices, three saunas and a court to play padel.”

The seven other suspects were subsequently identified and arrested. In addition to 2800 kilos of cocaine, expensive cars and digital data carriers were seized during searches.
