Miel Pancake rises at the Kuipersakkerstraat flea market: “Our father wanted this so much” (Schoten)

With forty stands of residents and many hundreds of visitors, Martine D’Hooghe, who took the initiative for the flea market, can look back with satisfaction. The atmosphere was cheerful. Old and new residents got to know each other better. There was an influx of buyers from all over Schoten and quite a few were sold.

At the very back of the long Kuipersakkerstraat, Peter (55) and Ingrid Wackenier (58) had set up their griddle where it was coming and going all day long. All exhibitors had received receipts for two pancakes from organizer Martine out of gratitude for their participation. But there were also a lot of passers-by who were willing to pay one euro for such a couple of freshly prepared pancakes.

“We had dough for eight hundred pancakes and our big pot was almost completely empty during the afternoon. They are also very tasty”, Peter pours some dough over the baking tray again. The bakers’ aprons feature ‘Miel Pancake Original’ in large letters.

Solo

Miel ‘Pancake’ Wackenier was a special man. “In the sixties he made music in The Twens, the backing band of the Antwerp Elvis Presley Vick Beasley”, shows Peter some black and white photos. “Later he started working in the advertising department of the Solo factory in Merksem. To sell that butter, he often baked pancakes during demonstrations in the Grand Bazar and at festivities.”

“Of course father baked with Solo butter, but the dough was made according to a recipe he composed himself: Miel’s pancakes are so irresistible because they are airy and sweet in their own right at the same time. You hardly need any sugar. They also come off so nicely.”

At the time, Miel himself put together that legendary large baking tray on which he could prepare ten pancakes at the same time. “Later he also used it to bake at parties of his football club SK Schoten, at the campsite in the Ardennes, with the elders of the monastery and at Candlemas in the Church of Our Lady in Koningshof. Dad has lived in the Kuipersakkerstraat for a large part of his life. Miel and his pancakes were also welcome there, “says Peter’s sister Ingrid Wackenier.

Corona

Two years ago, the cheerful man with the mustache was one of the first Scotsmen to be felled by corona. “I am sure that the Sint-Cordulakerk had been too small for his farewell, but that was not possible. Very painful”, Peter gets a lump in his throat.

“But we will commemorate him as it should within a few weeks with a large pancake party for 130 family members and friends elsewhere in Schoten. He certainly deserved it. And we could not miss this flea market in its own street, certainly not on this symbolic date”, says Peter.

Miel Pancake should have turned 86 on Sunday. “For us, this was a sign that we absolutely had to respond to organizer Martine’s request to bake pancakes again today. Father would certainly have done that himself,” said brother and sister Wackenier.

“We keep the baking tray and recipe under lock and key. But on days like these, we like to take it outside again. I note here that our father – a very well-behaved man, sometimes even a bit gullible – has not yet been forgotten. The many compliments on the quality of ‘his’ pancakes are good for our hearts.”(yes)
