The Antwerp police arrested two men on Saturday who had just committed some shoplifting. The duo carried stolen clothing and perfume worth 1,4000 euros. The loot was hidden in shopping bags that bypass the alarm systems. They may also be the perpetrators of similar acts last week on the Meir.

The West region shoplifting team noticed two men using insulated shopping bags to evade alarm systems on Saturday afternoon. “The men seemed very rushed and kept a close eye on their surroundings,” said police spokesman Willem Migom. “They left the Meir towards the Stadspark, where they were briefly lost sight of.”

They got the men back in the picture via police cameras, after which the team and some intervention patrols were able to catch the duo at the corner of the Van Eycklei and the Rubenslei. As expected, their bags were provided with insulating material. The team found an expensive handbag, trousers and shorts in one bag, and nine bottles of perfume in the other. In total, the loot amounted to about 1 400 euros.

“The suspects turned out to be well known for similar offenses and were eligible for a theft last week on the Meir. They were able to escape, but they had to leave behind their loot worth about 1,000 euros. The duo (21 and 29) are being arraigned,” the police said.
