After three months, fugitive Abdelgani El Haouari was arrested in Merksem on Wednesday. He was sentenced to nine years in prison on May 31, but a few minutes before that, he cut his ankle ligament and fled.

On May 31, 2022, Abdelgani El Haouari was convicted of theft with various aggravating circumstances. But a few minutes earlier, El Haouari got rid of his anklet, after which every trace of the man was missing.

Not only the fact that El Haouari was able to loosen his anklet is striking. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2007. He was released after serving a third of his sentence. He was given an ankle bracelet pending his conviction in Leuven for theft with various aggravating circumstances.

The Federal Police’s Fast team was able to arrest several fugitives in the past month. As many as ten people could be found, two fugitives have already been arrested since the beginning of September. The federal police are happy. “Not only because of the high number of arrests, but also because of the severity of the sentences that they can no longer avoid,” said department head Gerry Van Loock.

The Fast team not only cooperates with other units of the federal police and local police zones, but also has very good ties with foreign FAST units.
