Tram passenger victim of senseless violence: arrested suspect turns out to be a heavy boy who was signaled (Antwerp)

The Antwerp police were able to arrest two men on Friday evening who had attacked a tram passenger at Berchem station. One of them turns out to have a decent criminal record and was also given a signal. According to witnesses, the men attacked the tram passenger just like that, because the man was startled by their dog. The facts are provisionally qualified as senseless violence. “But the interrogations will have to show whether it is a hate crime,” said the Antwerp police. A third suspect is being tracked down.

Around 6.30 pm the Antwerp police received a report about a fight on tram 9 in the direction of Eksterlaar, near Berchem station. “Witness statements show that a man with a dog would have punched another man out of nowhere,” said Willem Migom, spokesman for the Antwerp police. “Two other men intervened and also struck the victim several times. The three perpetrators then fled.”

A witness on the tram saw the incident happen. “A couple from Egypt sat at the back of the tram. Three men came on the tram with a dog. The Egyptian man was shocked, and that signaled the three men to send their dog to the couple. Some tram passengers intervened, but could not prevent the Egyptian man from being beaten. De Lijn drivers tried to get the three men out of the vehicle, but they returned. One man put his finger to his throat and signaled that he would cut the throat of the Egyptian couple.”

Shortly after the facts, the police in the area were able to arrest two suspects, including the man with the dog. “It concerns a 42-year-old man with a considerable criminal record. The man was also signaled. The third suspect could be identified, he is being tracked down.”

Reason unclear

Initially, the victim preferred not to have an ambulance on site. The man would go to the doctor the next day to have his injuries diagnosed. The facts happened in front of his wife. She was very much impressed. The two were eventually taken to hospital for a check-up. The man received a severe blow to his head.

The cause of the fight is still unclear, according to police. For the time being, senseless violence is assumed. “The interrogations will have to show whether or not it concerns a hate crime. The investigating judge will have to determine whether these are taken as aggravating circumstances,” said the police.
