British con man Robert Hendy-Freegard, who is the subject of the three-part Netflix documentary The puppet master: hunting the ultimate conman, was arrested in Groot-Bijgaarden. This is reported by VRT Nws. He was called internationally after an incident in France.

Robert Hendy-Freegard was called into police at his home in France at the end of August for running an illegal kennel of nearly 30 dogs with his partner Sandra Clifton. However, that check did not go as expected. Because the man tried to flee when he was asked to go to the police station. Hendy-Freegard jumped into his chariot and fled. But while driving, he hit two police officers. One of them had to be taken care of in the hospital itself.

Since then, there has been a search warrant and an investigation into attempted manslaughter of a public servant, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. The man was caught in our country last Friday, after an eight-day flight. “The person and the car had been signaled under a European Arrest Warrant after what happened in France. Thanks to the border information network, information is shared across national borders, so we knew that the car had to be intercepted,” Gilles Blondeau of the public prosecutor’s office told sister newspaper The newspapaer.

‘Last night a patrol from East Flanders was able to intercept the man in Groot-Bijgaarden. He will be arraigned today before the investigating judge and will then be interrogated. Then it will become clear whether or not he is arrested’. According to Blondeau, the man was alone in the car. Whether he will be extradited to France will depend on the decision of the judge in our country.

‘Ultimate scammer’

The Brit is not ready for his test piece. Earlier this year he was featured in the three-part Netflix documentary The puppet master: hunting the ultimate conman. In it, relatives of his victims explain how he pretended to be a secret agent from 1990 to 2002 and in this way managed to grab several women, after which he started to extort money from them. In total, he managed to steal no less than one million pounds.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment, but he appealed and was released after three years in prison. Then he picked up the thread again. Hendy-Freegard disappeared in 2014 with a woman, whose children testify in the documentary series, and reappeared in France. He would have led a secluded life there for years, presumably with the woman, in a forest near the French village of Vidallat, between Limoges and Vichy. Until the French agents came knocking on the door. He was on the run for eight days.
