With the final end of macro and Subway Belgium in sight, some top managers of the retailer have left the company, according to internal communication that RetailDetail was able to view.

“New Horizons”

Although the employees of Makro and Metro Belgium were asked to remain in service in order to ensure the continuity of the retailer in the interest of all employees, some managers of the company have decided to leave the company early. Operational director Pieter Verstraete left on July 31, to say that he wanted to “explore new horizons”. According to our information, he doesn’t have a new job yet.

The German Christoph Otte-Wiese, who was the financial director, also left the company. He returned to parent company Metro in Germany on August 14 and is succeeded in the Belgian company by Tilman Gronau of One Square Advisors GmbH, a consultancy specializing in financial restructuring. This is apparent from internal communication from Makro Cash & Carry Belgium, which was passed on to the editorial staff of RetailDetail.

On September 1, it was announced that the Belgian branch of Makro and Metro has requested a judicial restructuring. It is the intention of acquirer Bronze Properties to sell viable parts of the company. That process could take several months.
