After Toby Alderweireld (Antwerp) and Dedryck Boyata (Club), the third central defender of the Red Devils is also playing in the Jupiler Pro League this season. Jan Vertonghen says goodbye to his sidetrack at Benfica and has to become the new leader in the defense of Anderlecht. A great teacher for Zeno Debast and Hannes Delcroix too.
“There were already contacts with RSC Anderlecht in the past, but suddenly all the pieces of the puzzle fell together”, Vertonghen said on the club site. “I have been following the club’s project for some time and I am convinced that with my experience I can teach this group something. This is just the right step in my career and I’m really looking forward to playing my first game at Lotto Park.”
Vertonghen has signed a contract for two seasons with the Purple & White and will wear the jersey number 14. In financial terms, he has to give up: his annual salary of 4 million euros gross from Benfica becomes one of 1.5 million euros net in Brussels. But even then, he becomes one of the Purple & White’s record earners. Today Vertonghen is training for the first time – in principle he is also eligible to play against OHL on Sunday – after which he will be officially introduced.
