Boechout has been named cycling municipality of the year for the fourth time. In the municipalities with fewer than twenty thousand inhabitants, Kinrooi and Zutendaal won. The Antwerp municipality already received the title in 2012, 2015 and 2020.

Last year, the cycle route from Vremde towards the Sint-Gabriëlcollege was expanded with a cycling zone from the Provinciesteenweg to the school gate. In the sub-municipality of Vremde, the number of streets in a cycling zone was expanded from three to six and in the autumn of 2025, the reconstruction of the Wommelgemsesteenweg will begin, which will have separate cycle paths.

These are some recent interventions and plans that the municipality of Boechout has drawn up for cyclists. It was no surprise to Mobility Alderman Rudi Goyvaerts (Pro Boechout-Vremde) that Boechout became Cycling Municipality of the Year again.

“We had a very strong file. Giving priority to the bicycle has been a clear policy choice of this administration for years,” he says. It is a response that the jury of the competition, organized by the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Science, confirms. “This Antwerp municipality is a pioneer in the field of cycling and cycling infrastructure. Thanks to the investments, cycling is pleasant and safe and the bicycle really got into the DNA of the residents,” is the verdict.

Alderman Goyvaerts believes that all plans are tested against cycling comfort: “Boechout has to accept a lot of through car traffic. That is why we want to give cyclists all possible comfort and safety. This ambition is clearly reflected in our policy plans. The building code, the mobility plan and even the energy and climate plan, the cyclist occupies an important or priority role in all of them.”

The jury sees the construction of bicycle streets with bicycles in the opposite direction on an elevated bicycle path as an innovative intervention. “By consistently playing the cyclist’s card, we sometimes have to make difficult choices. Introducing cycling zones in rural areas and turning the village center of Boechout into a cycling zone are not obvious decisions. However, more residents notice that slower traffic is safer for all road users and contributes to the quality of life in our village.”
