The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old internee who was locked up in Ghent prison. The prison system confirmed this to our editors.

Prisoners found 28-year-old Amah Ayité, a vulnerable person with serious mental problems, in a coma in his cell last Thursday. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.

The twenty-something of Togolese descent – a diabetic patient – had been ill for weeks, had stopped eating, was vomiting and refused his medication. Guards at the Ghent prison reportedly raised the alarm several times about the man’s poor condition, but according to newspaper sources, this had no effect: “When we reported this, we were told that he was only playing comedy,” he said. one of the sources tells Het Nieuwsblad.

The family reacts shocked to the news: “Why were they not concerned?”, the sisters, who were approached by the newspaper, said.

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has started an investigation into the death of Amah Ayité.
