In May last year, Urban.brussels granted an urban development permit to Brussels Mobility for the complete redevelopment of Place Sainctelette and Place IJzer. Both are strategic intersections, for car traffic and cyclists as well as for public transport. Thousands of Brussels residents cross paths there every day.
In concrete terms, the reconstruction must reconnect the canal banks via a ‘bridge square’ with plenty of space for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. The lanes for car traffic and their width will be redesigned, large walking areas will be created for pedestrians, separated cycle paths and a lot of greenery.
Fewer lanes on Havenlaan
After the preparatory works, the shipyard will actually be launched on Monday. The entire project will take about three years in total, but is divided into small phases that each move from the west to the east, so from Molenbeek towards IJzer.
In the very first phase, Lavalléestraat and Opzichterstraat will be renovated until July. These roads will be needed at a later stage for the diversions.
The road will be redesigned at both locations and cycle paths will be constructed. According to the office of Minister for Mobility and Public Works Elke Van den Brandt (Green), the traffic impact will remain limited.
In concrete terms, Opzichterstraat will be closed to car traffic, access from Lavalléestraat to Sainctelette is closed and the number of lanes on Havenlaan is limited to 2 x 1 lane. The pedestrian and cycle paths will remain accessible during these works.
