The personal collision happened on Tuesday around 8:30 PM at the level crossing in the Langestraat in Wezemaal, a sub-municipality of Rotselaar. “According to a witness, the barriers of the railway crossing went down,” says Infrabel spokesperson Thomas Baeken. The initial findings indeed show that they functioned well. The victim died on the spot.

According to the Leuven public prosecutor’s office, which is investigating the case, it is an accident. The underage boy ignored the barriers and was hit by the train, the public prosecutor’s office reported to Belga. Police, fire brigade, an ambulance and a mosquito arrived on the scene, but help could no longer help.

Train traffic between Leuven and Aarschot was halted for a while after the accident. The NMBS installed replacement buses. Where possible, train traffic was diverted. Rail traffic could be resumed again on Wednesday morning, Infrabel said.

Infrabel warned last month about the dangers of railway walking after a woman crossed a closed railway crossing in Wetteren with a buggy. A day later, a motorcyclist was hit by a train in Zulte. In February, Infrabel proposed an action plan to further increase rail safety and prevent track runners.
