Construction of a new bridge over the highway on the E313 in Ranst started this week. Traffic has to make do with two lanes less in both directions, which immediately resulted in heavy traffic jams on Tuesday.

The old Vaartstraat bridge, over the E313 highway in Ranst, was in urgent need of replacement. A few years ago, the bridge was seriously damaged when a truck crashed into the underside. After the necessary studies, the Roads and Traffic Agency decided that a new bridge was the only option to guarantee road safety.

The old bridge was finally demolished at the beginning of March, and on Monday night a contractor started applying road markings so that the construction of a new central pillar for the future bridge can start. Due to these works, two lanes have been closed to traffic in both directions since Tuesday morning.

That creates the necessary traffic jams. In the direction of Hasselt, traffic is at a standstill from Wommelgem, those who have to go to Antwerp already slow down before Massenhoven. The nuisance promises to continue for some time, because the new bridge over the highway will probably not be ready for use until the end of 2024.
