Kapellen opens tourist season dedicated to time and stars (Kapellen)

Kapellen opens the tourist season on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April. The opening is all about time and stars.

That weekend you can visit the Smoldersklok and an exhibition with remarkable Oriental timepieces for free. You can also have your own clock or timepiece estimated and look at the stars in a mobile planetarium and in real life! All activities are free and take place during the last weekend of April between 10am and 5pm, unless otherwise stated.

You can visit the Smoldersklok at any time in the Hoeve Van Paesschen, at Van Paesschendreef 3. A guide will tell you everything about the famous Smoldersklok. Experts call the Smoldersklok in Kapellen one of the most ingenious astronomical clocks in the world, both technically and scientifically. Willem Wim Smolders (1923-2006) built the work of art between 1943 and 1952, which is 3.5 meters high and weighs more than one and a half tons. The clock has 30,000 parts that he turned himself on his small milling machine. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons you can have your timepieces and clocks estimated during ‘Clocks in the attic’. In EXPOG, Antwerpsesteenweg 2, there is a continuous exhibition on Eastern time measurement. The guides are happy to tell you the special stories behind the curious timepieces. If you have had enough of looking at all those timepieces, you can broaden your view in the mobile planetarium. The 360° projection puts you in the middle of the stars. Employees of the Urania public observatory will guide you through the universe. You will experience the pinnacle on Saturday evening, when Urania places two telescopes on the balcony of the De Kroon room. If the weather is good, you can look at the stars in a unique way between 9 p.m. and midnight. Places are limited, so registration via the online store is mandatory. The mobile planetarium is also open then.
