Suzuki, Watanabe and Machida return to Belgium

Japan went to the Asia Cup in Qatar as one of the favorites. That adventure ends in the quarter-finals. In extra time it became 2-1 for Iran. STVV’er Zion Suzuki stood under the crossbar. Koki Machida (Union) and Tsuyoshi Watanabe (AA Gent) watched from the dugout.

Didemassa Morita gave Japan the lead. However, Iran still took the lead in the final phase. Mohammad Mohebi scored the equalizer ten minutes before the end. Iran was close to scoring the winning goal. The match seemed to be heading for extra time until Japan conceded a penalty in the final minute of extra time. Alireza Jahanbakhsh kicked in next to Zion Suzuki.

Union, STVV and KAA Gent will soon see their players return from the Asian Cup. Iran advances and will face Qatar or Uzbekistan in the semi-finals.

21-year-old Zion Suzuki did not miss a minute at the Asia Cup. Japan defeated Vietnam (4-2) and Indonesia (3-1) in the group stage. Iraq recorded a 2-1 victory. In the eighth finals, Japan won 1-3 against Bahrain. In the quarterfinals, Iran pulled the longest rope.

Tsuyoshi Watanabe (26) only played 8 minutes against Indonesia in those five international matches. Peer Koki Machida completed the ninety minutes against Indonesia and came on for ten minutes against Bahrain.
