Zizou Bergs (ATP-131) has given Belgium the first point in the Davis Cup meeting with Croatia. He defeated Marin Cilic (ATP-1044) in three sets.
Bergs started well in his match against Grand Slam winner Cilic in the Arena Varazdin. He broke through his Croatian opponent’s serve in the fifth game and held the gap, the first set went to Belgium 6-4.
In the second set both players were evenly matched. Bergs had to serve at 4-5 to stay in the set, but cracked at the end. Cilic leveled the match again with 4-6.
In set three, Bergs broke Cilic’s serve in the third game. Our compatriot did not encounter any problems on his serve and was allowed to serve for the match at 5-4. The first match point scored immediately: 6-4. The match lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Bergs: “This feels very special, I have a lot of respect for Cilic”
Bergs was very happy with his victory afterwards, but also had a lot of respect for his opponent: “He was number three in the world, won a Grand Slam, I have a lot of respect for him. I know how hard it is to reach the top. This gives me a lot of confidence for the future, I am a late bloomer, but step by step I will get there.”
In the second singles match on Saturday, Joris De Loore (ATP-192) will compete against 22-year-old Duje Ajdukovic (ATP-125).
