Twice as cheap as the snortable variety and easily available, but just as addictive: crack is everywhere. “The phenomenon is worsening in all neighborhoods,” said police commissioner Gabriele Evangelisti. Drug addicts are increasingly finding their way to the chic residential areas of Sint-Gillis. Fights, drugs in the sandbox and feces on porches are daily occurrences. Melanie Verroken and her family have had enough. “Letting junkies sleep in our car is less hassle than having the window replaced every time.”
