Farmers occupied the busy intersection at the former McDonald’s on the Mechelen Vesten with about twenty tractors in the late hours of Friday evening.

At this strategically important intersection, car traffic from the north normally also enters the city ring (R12), where one-way traffic has been in place for more than a year. Cars can’t go anywhere. Several teams from the Rivierenland police zone are on site. It is currently unclear how long farmers plan to occupy the intersection. This concerns a delegation of young farmers who took action earlier on Friday evening in Sint-Katelijne-Waver.

“We are in discussions to determine how long the occupation will last. We are trying to reach an agreement with respect for the positions,” says police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande. The farmers cleared the intersection the same evening.
