The new Campus Opera was festively opened on February 2, 2024. The location will be used for educational activities and is a meeting place for all KU Leuven students in Antwerp with a learning center and a spacious agora.

Close to the two current campuses in Antwerp, Campus Carolus and Campus Sint-Jacob, KU Leuven opened a new branch in Christusstraat: Campus Opera. The university is breathing new life into the iconic building that served as the Provincial Safety Institute for decades. The new site will mainly be used for KU Leuven research and education that previously took place in the buildings of Thomas More University of Applied Sciences in Sint-Andriesstraat.

The late modernist building from 1953 has been renovated since 2021 and houses a dining facility for students and staff on the ground floor, a spacious library and learning center, and various classrooms, group work rooms and study areas. There is also room for subject-specific rooms: practicals such as interpreter booths (with investment in the latest technology), language labs and a multifunctional space for, among other things, the Flemish Sign Language course.

With this campus we are taking a new step in the development of KU Leuven in Antwerp. Thanks to its location a stone’s throw from our other buildings, the new branch will be a meeting place for all Antwerp KU Leuven students: not only to study but also to relax together.

Rector Luc Sels

“KU Leuven is present in Antwerp with two courses: commercial sciences and applied linguistics. With Campus Opera, KU Leuven continues to develop an attractive learning environment for our Antwerp students. Together with other colleagues from higher education and the city of Antwerp, KU Leuven wants to help shape the Antwerp educational landscape,” says Yves Stevens, academic administrator of KU Leuven in Antwerp.
