“They work for us with heart and soul, respect for the people of the farming industry.” Werner Van Rillaer earned his stripes as a folk singer in the cafes of the Mechelen region, but these days he is also popular online. He is currently scoring on social media with a statement of support for the farmers’ protest. “Two days ago I posted the song online. First on Facebook, where it immediately received a lot of likes. It has been on TikTok since yesterday and it really exploded there. I already have about 133,000 viewers,” says Werner, who has lived in Rijmenam for years. “I regularly put songs online, but I have never received as much response as I did with this song. The likes and shares are going up quickly.”

“I put the song itself together fairly quickly. Last weekend I already had a few ideas and lines in my head and then started working on the lyrics and chords. Why am I doing this? I have a lot of sympathy for the farming industry. I do not come from a farming family or have farmers in my circle of friends, but I grew up in the greenery of Muizen, where I spent my youth among the fields and farms. I came into contact with several farmers. I think that people, especially the youth, are paying less and less attention to the interests of farmers. These people work from morning to evening. They deserve respect.”

Or as Werner himself sings: ‘Without farmers, there’s no ferret’. Due to the popularity of the song, the folk singer is thinking of recording the song in a studio and releasing it. “I have already recorded a first version in my home studio. I will soon record an English-language album and maybe re-record my protest song in the studio in between. Although I do find that people are more likely to be fans of my live version. It should not be too polished and it should sound spontaneous.”
