A 27-year-old man from Tremelo was sentenced by the criminal court in Mechelen to a prison sentence of one year with probation. After a party in Lier, he grabbed his girlfriend by the throat and dragged her through their apartment by her hair. He tried to strangle her several times.
The facts took place during the night of August 15 to 16, 2021. After a party at La Rocca in Lier during which both people involved had drunk heavily and used drugs, the woman wanted to go to sleep. However, the man did not let that happen. He jumped on her, held her down and squirted a tube of lubricant into her mouth and nose. He put his hand over her mouth, pinched her nose and tried to strangle her.
The woman was able to wriggle free, but the man grabbed her again and dragged her by her hair through their apartment. She was able to escape a second time and called the police. During his interrogation, the man said he remembered nothing. However, the medical examiner determined that the woman’s injuries were consistent with the story she had told and that she had been a victim of potentially life-threatening violence.
Post-traumatic stress syndrome
A few months after the incident, the woman went to the police again and recanted her story. She says she suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome after domestic violence from her previous partner and she confused the events of the present and the past. Despite the medical examiner’s findings, she claimed that her current partner had done nothing.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, there was indeed violence and it therefore demanded a prison sentence of two years against the man. The court did not respond to that. The judge sentenced the man in his twenties to a prison sentence of one year with probation. He must, among other things, follow guidance to tackle his problem of domestic violence. (svds)
