Fire brigade must extinguish ‘campfire’ made of pallets and car tires at Turbo roundabout during farmers’ protest | Ghent

--

About a hundred farmers gathered at the Turbo roundabout in Ghent on Wednesday evening to take action against declining incomes and increasingly strict European environmental regulations. A strong fire was lit using, among other things, wooden pallets and car tires, but the flames became larger than expected. The fire brigade had to arrive on site to bring the situation under control.

Farmers at home and abroad have been taking action for a whole week to express their dissatisfaction. They protest against declining incomes and increasingly strict European environmental regulations. In our country, this protest mainly translates into roadblocks. In Ghent, about a hundred farmers gathered on Wednesday evening at the Turbo roundabout at Euro-Silo Ghent, an important traffic intersection in the north of the city.

Big flames

In combination with the starting signal of the Light Festival, the blockade caused a lot of traffic problems. A campfire was lit on the verge of the turbo roundabout on Wednesday evening. Wooden pallets, car tires and other flammable materials were eagerly set on fire. A little too eagerly, as it turns out, because the flames turned out to be bigger than expected. Just before midnight, the Ghent fire brigade was called in to extinguish the fire.

On Thursday, a large burnt-out mountain of rubbish could be seen on the verge next to the roadway. After the passage of about four hundred tractors at the Bijloke, some of the farmers who had dropped out returned to the Turbo roundabout. The Ghent police kept an eye on things and closed the ramp to the R4 in Oostakker as a precaution. Some farmers lit another ‘campfire’ on Thursday afternoon, right next to the spot where things almost went wrong on Wednesday evening. The fire brigade has been informed and is ready to respond again.
