“The fact that a growing part of the Jewish community in Antwerp also supports Vlaams Belang has not escaped N-VA’s attention. And so Mayor De Wever sends Gantman out in an attempt to limit the electoral damage,” says Antwerp Vlaams Belang faction leader Sam Van Rooy.

Antwerp N-VA municipal councilor and ex-alderman André Gantman is in an interview in Gazette of Antwerp sharply for Vlaams Belang. “The party abuses the fight against anti-Semitism to gain support for their anti-Islam program. They try to apply the age-old principle of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend,’” Gantman says.

According to Van Rooy, these accusations are gratuitous and easy to refute. He points to the anti-Semitism that is said to exist among a large part of the Muslim community.

“The facts are what they are: the Jewish district, schools and institutions must be heavily protected against Muslim terrorists,” says Van Rooy. “Jewish students today are intimidated and chased by Muslim youth. Research shows that a very large, disproportionately large part of the Muslim community harbors anti-Semitic views. If the Vlaams Belang program on migration, Islamization and security had been implemented decades ago, the deadly jihad attack on the Jewish museum would not have taken place and Jews would feel much safer on the streets today.”

According to Van Rooy, the statements have a purpose other than concern about the Jewish community and Vlaams Belang.

“The fact that a growing part of the Jewish community in Antwerp realizes this and supports Vlaams Belang has not gone unnoticed by N-VA,” says Van Rooy. “And so De Wever sends Gantman out in an attempt to limit the electoral damage. For decades, I have sincerely stood up for the safety of the Jewish community, as everyone who follows me on social media and reads my books and articles knows. André Gantman knows that, and it would be to his credit if he were intellectually honest about it. Or is the fight against anti-Semitism subordinate to electoral calculation for him?”
