After the serious fire that destroyed two warehouses and a clothing store in Harelbeke on Wednesday afternoon, the fire brigade is still looking for a missing man. “All evacuated local residents were able to return home last night,” Mayor Alain Top (Vooruit) said on Thursday.
A serious fire raged on a site along the Gentsesteenweg in Harelbeke on Wednesday. About 25 people were then evacuated and the municipal disaster plan was announced.

“Everyone was able to return home last night,” said Mayor Top. “The fire brigade took the necessary measurements in the homes before releasing them. There were no toxic substances in the smoke.”
The municipal disaster plan was ended on Thursday morning. The fire brigade is still looking for a missing man. “He was probably on the site when the fire broke out.” A public prosecutor’s office was also appointed to determine the cause of the fire.
Two warehouses, one with a car wash and one that was used as a warehouse for vintage cars and old war equipment, and a clothing store were destroyed. The adjacent wood processing company could be saved.
