His son left the building last Friday and now that his wife, daughter and both dogs have also moved to drier places, veterinarian Geert Beeckaert (57) from Lo-Reninge is alone on his island. “The freezer is full and I can finally update my administration,” he says. “But if I want to keep my basement dry, I have to get up every two hours at night.”
