A 38-year-old Colombian woman risks a fine of 28,800 euros before the Bruges criminal court for undeclared work and illegal employment.

Between October 14 last year and January 4 this year, the labor inspectorate raided six sushi bars in Waregem, Oudenaarde, Schoten, Ghent and Sint-Niklaas. Each time there was a staff member working in the room who was not allowed to work in Belgium at all. On paper, the six victims worked for the Portuguese company of Colombian Shakti M. (38), but in reality it turned out to be an illegal employment agency.

According to labor auditor Sofie Heyndrickx, the system was deliberately set up to cheat on undocumented workers. In addition to a fine of 28,800 euros, Heyndrickx also requested a confiscation of more than 40,000 euros for Shakti M., who did not show up for her trial on Friday morning.

After the inspections, some of the wage shortages were regularized by the catering business operators. They themselves were not prosecuted for using the cheap workers. The court will make its ruling on December 8.
